3.Excerpt from interview

Interview No. 01: Mr. Le Xuan Kieu - Director of the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam.

Question 1: Sir, as Director of VMQTTG, could you please tell us the typical characteristics and values of the relic?

Answer : The Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam is not only an architectural and artistic heritage, a special national relic, but also an urban architectural heritage, a public space serving the people of the capital and a unique tourist destination that attracts a large number of tourists to visit.

The Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam is the largest Confucian relic, the earliest established in the system of Temples of Literature, Literature Temples, and Literature Courts nationwide.

The Temple of Literature is associated with the Imperial Academy as the largest high-level training center of our country during the monarchy period. This is the difference between the Temple of Literature - Thang Long Hanoi and many other Temples of Literature. This place has trained thousands of talented people, those who have contributed to building and developing the country throughout history. The Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy also contains intangible cultural values: the tradition of studiousness, respect for teachers, and respect for talents of the Vietnamese people.

Question 2 : Please give your opinion on VMQTG with current tourism development.

Answer : The Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam is one of the top attractions in Hanoi today, welcoming nearly 2 million visitors each year. To preserve and promote the value of the relic for tourism development, VM is currently focusing on the following tasks:

Change thinking, shift from closing and opening relics to better serving tourists, from welcoming guests, explaining and other services.

Innovate activities, diversify forms of activities associated with relic values to meet tourists' needs.

Enhance tourist services; automatic tour guide system, souvenir shops

Building brand identity: logo, signage system, information signs

Question 3 : Sir, how do you evaluate the current number of tourists coming to the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam?

Answer : The above innovations have initially brought about effectiveness, with the number of visitors to the Temple of Literature increasing by 15% in 2017 and 10% in 2016.

Question 4 : Can you tell us more about the current difficulties and limitations of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam in terms of tourism development?

Answer : The Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam currently lacks space to organize services to exploit and promote the value of the relic.

The intangible cultural values of the relics have not been effectively exploited, lacking the liveliness of the relics, mainly visiting ancient architectural works, while the values and "living" elements are not really clear.

Question 5: What do you think about the products and services of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam?

Answer: There is a lack of supporting products and services, souvenirs are not worthy of the relic, there are no goods with the characteristics of the relic. Events are sometimes not really suitable in terms of content and location. There are too many souvenir shops in the relic area, affecting visitors' visits as well as the sacredness of the relic.

The interpretation service of the Temple of Literature Center has not been clearly introduced, so many tourists do not fully understand the heritage.

Many tourist groups that come to the relic are brought by travel companies and use the company's tour guides, but because the tour guides do not have enough knowledge about the relic to introduce it to tourists, they distort information and do not ensure that tourists fully understand the relic.

The target audience for visiting relics is very diverse (in terms of both origin and age), but currently there are no specific guides for each different target group.

Question 6 : What is your orientation to promote the value of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam relic associated with sustainable tourism development?

Answer: Develop tourism types and diversify tourism products associated with the characteristics of relics, to enhance the attractiveness of relics and attract visitors to relics.

Develop commercial businesses, supplementary services, and experiential activities that are suitable to the characteristics of the relic site. At the same time, rearrange business activities within the relic site.

Research and design, improve the quality of souvenir products at relics to increase attractiveness, uniqueness and suitability to tourists' tastes.

Question 7: Sir, what are your comments on human resources and management of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam?

Reply:

Regarding human resources: Current technical difficulties and limitations in conservation activities (scientific and technical level, human resources, etc.) put pressure on the conservation activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam.

Regarding management: The Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam has very little autonomy to be able to directly cooperate with partners.

The machine is still cumbersome and does not operate really effectively.

Interview No. 02: Le Ba Dung, Head of Administration - General Department - Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam

Question 1 : Sir, please tell us about the current shortcomings in preserving and promoting the value of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam relic.

Reply:

Regarding space: The entire relic site includes both Van Lake and Giam Garden. However, Van Lake is divided by Quoc Tu Giam Street, making it difficult to exploit Van Lake and hindering tourists from visiting Van Lake.

Vuon Giam and Ho Van are two sub-areas within the scope of the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam relic site but have been little exploited and their value has not been promoted. They are located within the protection boundary I of the relic, so the construction of works to protect, exploit and promote the value of the relic is very complicated.

Lack of space to organize services to exploit and promote heritage values. Question 2 : Please tell us about the cultural activities in the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam relic site.

Answer: Musical performance during opening hours for visitors at Thai Hoc area

The permanent exhibition at Thai Hoc House introduces additional information about the history of the relic and the Vietnamese education system.

Calligraphy performance and gifting activities were held at Bai Duong house.

Interview No. 03: Duong Ngoc Ha, Head of Communication Education Department

- Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy

Question 1: Please tell us about the interpretation service (media education) for tourists.

Answer: The interpretation service of the Center for Cultural Education and Science of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam has met some requirements, however, some tours are guided by tour guides. Therefore, due to lack of understanding about the Temple of Literature or incorrect information about the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, the relic has not been clearly introduced, causing many tourists to not know about it.

Question 2 : Please tell us about the human resources for media education at the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam.

Answer: Currently, there are many visitors to the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, including domestic and international visitors. The department has only 07 staff members. Regarding foreign languages, there are 03 languages: English, French, Chinese. Therefore, next year, it is necessary to add 3 to 5 staff members and some more foreign languages such as: Korean, Japanese, Russian, Spanish... Only then can we meet the requirements of communication education to meet the needs of tourists.
