Sustainable Development Indicators System Recommended by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (Un Csd) in 2001

CONCLUDE

Sustainable development - the process of balanced and harmonious development of all three factors: economy, society, and environment - is the goal of most countries in the world today. Vietnam's socio-economic development strategy for 2001-2020 has determined the development perspective in this period as "Rapid development associated with sustainable development, sustainable development is a requirement throughout the Strategy" .

To evaluate the implementation results, the Government has introduced a system of statistical indicators to monitor and evaluate sustainable development. Therefore, it is necessary to have a comprehensive index to evaluate the sustainable development process based on this system of indicators. In order to contribute to the implementation of that requirement, the thesis has researched and solved some of the following basic issues:

- General overview of the concept, necessity and content of sustainable development. This is the theoretical basis for research and analysis of the system of statistical indicators of sustainable development.

- Synthesize some existing sustainable development statistical indicator systems in the world; overview and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the sustainable development statistical indicator system in Vietnam. With the indicator system just issued by the Government, the thesis analyzes and proposes measures to improve, creating conditions for better assessment of the country's sustainable development status.

- Propose a comprehensive assessment process for sustainable development including formulas and methods for determining factors in calculating individual indicators, component indicators and the comprehensive index of sustainable development. This is the main content of the thesis. The results of this process will show an overview of Vietnam's development process over the research period.

- Collect data on indicators for the period 2001 - 2010 to calculate the proposed sustainable development index. This calculation proves the feasibility of the thesis research. In addition, the author analyzes the current status of sustainable development in Vietnam for the period 2001 - 2010 based on the calculated results.

- Present some recommendations and solutions to effectively implement the unification work.

Statistics on sustainable development in Vietnam, creating the best data conditions, contributing to accurately assessing sustainability in the country's development process.

The thesis proposes a basic methodology for calculating the composite index of sustainable development for Vietnam in each development stage. In particular, the determination of the limit values as well as the weights of each indicator in the indicator system needs to be further studied. In addition, based on the above methodology and the system of local sustainable development indicators, it is possible to calculate the composite index of sustainable development for regions and localities. From there, it creates conditions for comparison and assessment of the development level of each province and city in the country, drawing out the factors that need to be overcome to make the country develop more and more sustainably.
