3.3.1. Files

A file (also known as a file, file, file) is a collection of data according to a certain structure, each file is saved on a storage device and given a name.

A file name consists of two parts: the name and the extension. There must be a period between the name and the extension. For example:

- DOCX, TXT, PDF: These are the extensions of text files.

- EXE, COM: This is the extension of the program file.

- BMP, GIF, JPG: These are the extensions of image files.

- MP3, MP4, DAT … These are the extensions of audio files.


Depending on the operating system, there may be different file name conventions.


The length of a file name depends on the file system. Depending on the file system and operating system, there are some characters that cannot be used in file names. On Microsoft Windows operating systems, the following characters cannot be used in file names: “/ : * ? " < > |” , file names cannot exceed 255 characters.

3.3.2. Disk, Folder, Path


A disk drive is a device used to read and write data. Common disk drives:


- Floppy drive: often called A, B. But it is rarely used today because it is easily damaged and can store very little capacity.

- Hard drive: also known as Hard Disk Drive (abbreviated: HDD) is a device used to store data on the surface of circular disks covered with magnetic material. Named C, D, E, . . with large capacity, fast data retrieval

- CD-R drive: is a drive that only reads CDs. CD-RW is a drive that reads and writes CDs. DVD-R is a drive that reads DVDs. DVD-RW or combo is a drive that reads and writes DVDs.


Folder is a place to store files according to a certain topic according to the user's wishes.


- Just like files, folders can be named arbitrarily but do not need to have an extension, the length of the name can also be named with Vietnamese accents.


- A directory can contain countless files and other directories called subdirectories, each subdirectory contains other subdirectories, the collection of directory structure is called a directory tree.


Path:


- Path is the way to indicate the drive, folder, or file we want to find.

- Example: C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14Winword.exe

Meaning of the above path: The path points to the Winword.exe file located in the Office14 folder, located in the Microsoft Office folder, located in the Program files folder and located in the root folder of drive C.

3.3.3. Set up display of hidden files and folders


We select the folder or file to hide, then go to the View tab and select Hide Selected items in the Show/hide command group (Or R_Click on the folder/file/Properties/ Select hide):

Apply changes to this folder only : Only change properties for this current folder

Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files : Changes the properties for the entire current folder, subfolders and files within it


Item check boxes : Display Checkbox for objects

File name extensions : Show file extensions

Hidden Items : Hide or not hide the folders marked hidden above.

3.4. Windows Management and Configuration


Control Panel is where the computer system configuration is managed, move the mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen select Settings Control Panel. Usually, the Control Panel screen is displayed as Category (in the View by section). Users can choose Large icons/Small icons. In this section, it is understood that we are opening the Control Panel window. Students can find the functions described below by using the search function.

3.4.1. Font Management


Use the Fonts function to install or remove unused fonts. Select the fonts you want to delete, press the Delete key to delete the font. To add new fonts: Copy the font you want to add and Paste it in the Fonts folder.

A small window will appear showing the font installation process. You can use the font after the installation is complete.

Or we can use the “drag and drop” feature to install fonts.

To install a new font, go to Control Panel and open the Fonts section. Then, use a file manager (like Windows Explorer, Computer, etc.) to open the folder containing the new fonts you want to install. Now, just select the font and use the mouse to “drag” them into the Fonts window . Windows will install the new font for you.

To delete a font from the system: In the Fonts screen Right-click on the font you want to delete Select Delete:

3.4.2. Change screen properties


Open the Personalization screen (or R_Click on the Desktop, select Personalize).

From this screen we can change:


Desktop Background: Desktop background image by clicking to select an available image or clicking the Browse button to select another image file.


Screen Saver: Set up screen saver mode, and can also set a Password to protect the current session.

Color: Change the color, font and font size of Tabs, Shortcuts, Title bar, …

Sounds: allows you to set the sound that is emitted when Windows executes closing/opening windows, shutting down/starting the system.

Themes: a set of elements that create the computer interface including graphic effects, sounds, colors, mouse, wallpaper... That is, instead of changing each item Desktop Background, Windows Color. Sounds..., we can choose an available theme set up according to the topics.

3.4.3. Change resolution, color mode


To change screen resolution in Windows 8, follow these instructions: On the Desktop screen, right-click on an empty area, the context menu appears, click Screen Resolution.

Click on Resolution: A small window appears with a slider and a preset screen resolution ratio. Drag the slider up or down to the screen resolution you want.

Once you have selected the appropriate screen resolution, click Apply, the computer screen will darken for about a second and then light up again.

The Display Settings window appears, click Keep Changes if you want to keep the changes, or click Revert if you want to change back to the old screen resolution.

3.4.4. Removing the program

To remove software from the computer system, go to Control panel select Uninstall a Program:

After selecting Uninstall a program, a screen that stores all installed software will appear as below:

Select the program to remove click Uninstall.


3.4.5. Configure system date and time

To see the system date and time details, the fastest way is to click on the date and time icon in the right corner of the Task Bar:
