INTRODUCTION

1. Reason for choosing the topic

Thu Dau Mot - a land with a history of labor, exploration, construction and fighting against foreign invaders for more than 300 years, counting from the day Commander Nguyen Huu Canh entered Gia Dinh province, forming the first Vietnamese villages on the new land. Although Thu Dau Mot is no longer the proper name of a province, in the past it was a regional place name, then a place name referring to administrative units at all levels through historical periods during changes in administrative boundaries. In 1869, for the first time the place name Thu Dau Mot was named for a district-level administrative unit. The name Thu Dau Mot province was officially established in 1900, until 1956, the First Republic was established in Southern Vietnam by Decree 143-NV dated October 22, 1956, the name Thu Dau Mot was abolished and Binh Duong province was established on the land of the former Binh An district.

Going back in history, looking back to clearly understand the name of a land is very necessary because everything must have its origin and development history, but finding the ancient roots is not easy. Talking about the name Thu Dau Mot is the same, this issue has been interested in studying by researchers, giving many explanations, many people have encountered a lot of confusion, in general, until now there is still no satisfactory answer. From there, I chose to research the topic "Thu Dau Mot place name: formation process, meaning and historical values (1900 - 1956)" with the aim of clarifying the above issues, contributing to supplementing the source of local historical documents of the land of Thu Dau Mot in the past as well as Binh Duong today, as a basis for compiling and teaching local history to foster and educate the younger generation to love their homeland and country, the awareness of appreciating, preserving and promoting the achievements and traditions that generations of ancestors have built.

2. History of research on the problem

Research on: "Thu Dau Mot place name: formation process, significance and historical values (1900 - 1956)" is a new topic that has not received deep attention from researchers, if anything, it is only general topics about the land.
