The Element of Fantasy in the Art of Building Space and Time

The unique fantasy art of medieval legends, world fantasy stories have had significant innovations and creations for the image of the work. Fantasy is not only viewed from the perspective of a purely artistic medium but has become a basic feature of the law of life in real life. The world of fantasy characters therefore does not exist in a strange place but is present right in this life in each of us. Realizing that makes the view of reality more comprehensive, objective and also deeper. With creative imagination, uniqueness and gentle, profound philosophy on each page, Suong Nguyet Minh has built a world of characters that is not mixed, has a magical attraction for all readers who love fantasy short stories.

3.2. The magical element in the art of constructing space and time

Surveying literary works after 1975, we will see the rise of the short story genre. Besides innovation in content, literary authors of this period also had a sense of innovation on the artistic level. Most of the writers admired in this period often wrote in the style of "magical realism". Fantasy elements were introduced into thick literary works.

special form a separate line.

In " Spreading Nets to Catch Birds ", Nguyen Huy Thiep affirmed that "literature is a world of fantasy of the writer. In literature , the fantasy world created by the writer can be real, similar to reality, different from reality, surreal"

[36;153]. That world of wild thoughts is not only built through the system of characters but also through other elements that make up the work such as space and time.

The Element of Fantasy in the Art of Building Space and Time

Artistic space is one of the ways to occupy reality, a form of expressing emotions and generalizing ideas and aesthetics. Artistic space has a very important position in organizing works. It is the "artistic model from the world that people are living in".

living, feeling one's position and destiny in it. Artistic space is closely linked to the concept of human and contributes to expressing that concept" [13;117]

3.2.1.Real space tinged with fantasy colors

In the dictionary of literary terms, the concept of artistic space is stated as “the internal form of an artistic image that expresses its integrity” and “description and narration always originate from a point of view, taking place in a certain field of view, through which the concrete, emotional artistic world reveals its entire extension: one next to the other, continuously spaced, high and low… forming an artistic perspective” [8;160]. At the same time, “artistic space in a literary work has the effect of modeling the relationships of the world picture such as time, society, morality…” [8;160]. Artistic space here is not identical to geographical space. However, artistic space always connects the relationships between different elements in a whole work and cannot be separated from the foundation of a combination of the most common characteristics. And it is this logical unity that forms part of the so-called "literary trend" that the writer accidentally or intentionally creates for himself.

In the short stories of Suong Nguyet Minh, there are still familiar spaces such as; Village, river wharf, well, communal house yard... a space familiar to any Vietnamese people. In that familiar space, readers feel that it contains many deep thoughts. Every time a character appears, readers discover a new aspect, a new mystery in a land that seems familiar but does not give readers a feeling of repetition or boredom. That is partly thanks to the author increasing the element of fantasy while building the artistic space. In many of his short stories, there is a mysterious quality that pervades. In short stories about the countryside, the writer builds an artistic space imbued with legendary colors,

As for many stories written about the mountains, this type of writing creates a ghostly space.

The space of the river wharf in Thirteen Wharfs , The Hoang Long River is returned to again and again in the work full of magical colors. Suong Nguyet Minh has brought readers into a completely strange world, a world where people do not know what is real and what is a dream. The Hoang Long River is associated with the legendary story of the dragon. The Yen Ha people rumored that: The dragon is "a girl with only the chest above the head that resembles a human, but the body is a snake, the feet and hands are webbed" [23;151`], the dragon often teases people, it is the corpse of a pregnant girl who was let drift down the river and turned into: the dragon and the wharf, extremely mysterious!

Coming to the story of a foreign land is an expansion of artistic space. The space is transformed, with a touch of fantasy in most of the short stories in the collection. The deserted Man Island outside Bai Tu Long Bay is described by Suong Nguyet Minh with a magical and imaginative style. All are evocative spaces such as Vung Dan Ba, Con Gai Hill, Khoa Tran Beach, the sacred Ngoc Well and even a temple. Living in that space, the people of Man Island have an extremely rich and primitive spiritual life. They have customs and beliefs never seen before. And this place also has people who are the incarnation of demons and gods.

The image of Mr. Tran - a skilled person pulling the glue appeared, making the space even more magical and mysterious. Hearing the sound of the glue complaining, full of reproach, resentment, and whining made men who heard it have an irresistible sexual desire, and women who heard it wanted to leave their husbands and follow the glue puller.

When describing the typical space here, Suong Nguyet Minh shows a very rich and abundant folk culture. In the story, the writer describes a very strange festival space, the fishing festival of Bac village takes place on the top of the women's hill. In this festival, instincts are often considered secret.

The most unique thing that needed to be covered was placed on the altar and turned into a bustling procession: "People carried the male genitalia out of the temple.

The chief fisherman took off all his clothes, left his body bare-chested, and ran with his penis in all four directions, South, North, West, and East, then pointed at the temple many times. Finally, he ran with his penis in the hollow of the fruit.

The hill, where the girl's legs are spread out, rhythmically thrusts many times into the hollow of the hill, where the girl's legs are spread out, rhythmically thrusts many times into the hollow of the hill, surrounded by thick green coniferous grass, like a pestle pounding rice in a mortar" [22;147]. This festival reminds us of

to the sacred Linga and Yoni that are respectfully worshiped. The story therefore contains folk elements and is full of fantasy. And it is mysterious in space: "incense smoke rises up; the fragrance is strong; the fishermen bow their backs to pray for the Lady to bless them with a good catch of shrimp and fish, to dig up a lot of sandworms... when the fishing festival ends and all the islanders return, the monkeys in the forest flock to the women's hill; they imitate the ritual, worship and welcome the male genitals... like the fishermen" [22;147].

The image of the Jade Well is full of legend: “The water from that well is sacred. When you drink it, you will feel extremely light and peaceful ; all worldly desires will disappear… scoop up some water to wash your face and drink… your burning stomach and sweat will disappear. It is strangely cool.”

The story of the sacred Ngoc well is even more attractive to people.

Read: “Ngoc Well is a place where underground water springs up in the middle of the island. Since ancient times, the well water has been cool and clear, you can see the rocks at the bottom and the golden turtle with its neck tucked in to sleep. The well water contains something very mysterious, when boys drink it, it stimulates their skin to burn. Their hearts flutter, their desire is so strong that women and girls cannot control themselves.”

The real space tinged with magical colors is one of the great characteristics of Daughter's Hill, from the strange stories about the island to the story and life of the lake puller. Readers go from one surprise to another, from one discovery to another. No

The story's expansive, fantasy-filled space really satisfies the reader's imagination.

Not only in Daughter's Hill but also in Di Huong , Suong Nguyet Minh has

takes the reader to a space that is not only full of mystery but also full of history. When writing about Nguyen Anh - a historical character, the space in the story is opened up to the space of Ngoc Tran Son mountains and forests and the Huong River. All the spaces in the story from the mountains, forests, rivers to the capital of King Gia Long are surrounded by a "light fragrance". The space of Ngoc Tran Son mountain has a "strange scent, sometimes strong, sometimes lingering. Anh recognizes the scent of a girl's skin"

passionately excited, mixed with the scent of elegant white orchids and rare wild yarrow. ø nh was dazed by the strange scent…” [22;209]. The space of Strange Fragrance awakened all senses and sexual desires in ø nh: “The strange scent drifted near and far, extremely seductive. ø nh’s heart was restless, unable to bear the aphrodisiac smell, frantically taking off his clothes. ø nh was as hasty as a sixteen-year-old boy”. The strange scent wafting in the space awakened in ø nh many things that he had never thought of and never known before.

By creating a real space tinged with fantasy, Suong Nguyet Minh has maximized the imagination in the reader's heart and is also a favorable environment for the character to reveal his personality. This is exactly what

has made the appeal of each work.

3.2.2.Dream space

In traditional literature, the fantasy world is often associated with supernatural characters such as gods, fairies, ghosts, etc. In today's short story, specifically the short story Suong Nguyet Minh, the characters are often immersed in dreams. In Snowy Summer Night , the love-sick character is living in a dreamy space, immersed in a "love dream" with his lover. The world of lovers living in imagination is so beautiful: "Snowy Summer Night", "The Sky Turns into

a vast and overwhelming grape trellis . Each green, purple, pink grape is a star. Each bunch of purple grapes is a falling constellation. Here is the constellation Aries. There is the constellation Scorpio. And there are the constellations Cancer, Libra…”. As for her, “her eyes are half-closed, her breathing is gentle and steady in the night. The sky is no longer lofty but low like a grape trellis. Just need to tiptoe a little to reach the sparkling stars.” [22;83]. Immersed in the dreamy space, he and she both have their own dreams. If: “I dream of falling snow, she dreams of burning herself to death with some damned guy in Bai Tu Long Bay” [22;90]. The young man cannot capture his lover’s soul, he can only control her body. The writer raised a question: “Is there true love in this world, or is love just an illusion, a dream?”. The boy was startled at the end of the story: “Dreaming! Or am I dreaming? I am living in a space with virtual stories” [22;102].

In The Girl's Hill , the boys live in a dreamy space making love to a girl: "The moon poured silver light on her skin, the wind also caressed her bare breasts. I happily saw a few bright red blood stains soaking into the white quartz sand... suddenly, I saw a few men blurring before my eyes... I couldn't believe it. It turned out to be a dream."

Space is a favorable environment for characters to express their thoughts and personalities. Many writers have thoroughly exploited and created their own mark in each of their works. Suong Nguyet Minh has done that. Each of his works is a special space thanks to which readers can understand more deeply the vague, magical and mysterious humanity of the characters.

3.2.3 . Virtual time

Just like artistic space, description and narration in literature always originate from a certain point of view in time. “Artistic time is the time in the work, the progress of events, the previous and the next create a timeline, it is different from historical time.

expression of external reality. Artistic time is expressed as the breathing of the work, the initial “breathing”, the acceleration through events, the release of breath at the end. In short, it is not only the length but also the speed.

speed, rapid or diffuse breathing. That is an element of the art form” [13;157]

If the artistic space is a favorable environment for the character to express his personality, the artistic time has its own characteristics that contribute to creating a new and fascinating world of images in the short story Suong Nguyet Minh. When entering the fantasy world in the dream (dream space), the character shows a journey in his mind to find a new land, full of mystery but real and vivid because it is the world where reality is not real.

The virtual and the virtual are realized. In the dream world, the character can easily and freely move around, regardless of time and different spaces.

Dream time is one of the highlights of fantasy time. And of course, dreams are also an artistic motif to express philosophies about human life. Dreams are "symbols", "codes" to effectively explain the depth of the character's inner self. Dreams are also a special form of time - an unconscious symbol of spiritual life. It cannot be clearly defined but is a continuous or discontinuous connection and chain of unconscious obsessions. Therefore, dream time is the time of spiritual reality. Suong Nguyet Minh has used dreams very successfully to express the depth of the character.

Typical of this type of time is the short story Night Train , in just one night, many overlapping memories appear in the husband's dream: " He wandered in his dreams" [21;115], the years in La Hai forest just kept coming back , memories of love with the girl H Linh. Through that dream, we see that the soldier has been through the war for many years, but everything related to the war with the land of La Hai, the girl of the H'Linh ethnic group ... is still imprinted in his mind. So that whenever there is an opportunity like the time he took the night train through La

These two days, it revived in him as intact as ever. Obviously, the past to him was just a thin shirt and he could turn it over at any time. Using the dream time, Suong Nguyet Minh portrayed the character at many different times. Therefore, the character appeared very realistic. With this way of exploitation, readers can explore deeper into the character's inner world.
