3.1.3. General assessment of business performance of the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Soc Trang province branch in the period 2013-2015

About income:

In the period of 2013-2015, the banking industry in general and Agribank Soc Trang branch in particular still faced many difficulties and challenges due to the general impact of the economic recession in recent years, so Agribank's income has been in a state of decline over the past 3 years. In 2013, the total income achieved was 1,081,839 million VND, of which, interest income accounted for 1,021,343 million VND, non-interest income accounted for only 60,496 million VND. In 2014, total revenue in 2014 only reached 927,812 million VND, down 154,027 million VND, equivalent to 14.24% compared to 2013. By 2015, revenue decreased to 198,564 million VND, down 729,248 million VND compared to 2014, equivalent to 78.60%.

The majority of the decrease in income is due to a decrease in interest income. This is explained as follows: in March 2014, Agribank began to lower the ceiling on VND deposit interest rates for terms under 6 months. This reduction in deposit interest rates has provided the basis for the bank to reduce lending interest rates for 5 priority groups: rural agriculture, export, supporting industry, small and medium enterprises, and high-tech enterprises to 8%/year.

Thus, both lending and deposit interest rates decrease, leading to a decrease in interest income and interest expense.

In 2015, implementing the direction of the Governor of the State Bank, from the beginning of 2015, Agribank implemented measures to increase capital mobilization and at the same time implemented many measures to reduce operating costs to create conditions to reduce lending interest rates to support businesses and farmers to overcome difficulties and develop production and business. Therefore, the bank's interest income in 2015 decreased sharply from VND 881,662 million to VND 117,864 million.
