2.3.1. Interview with Artisan Nguyen Dang

Question:Artist, please tell us what role does Mr./Ms. Hieu play in the Bai Choi festival?

Reply:

Mr. Hieu is usually a good singer, has a good voice, has a talent for composing verses, composing and singing poetry, especially the talent for improvising verses, six-eight poems, and six-eight variations in a direct, cheerful, and smooth way, and has the ability to act sensitively, gracefully and humorously. Mr. Hieu is not only a server such as: recording, distributing, calling out the cards... but also has the task of leading and controlling the game to create a lively and attractive atmosphere, attracting the audience to come and enjoy.

Therefore, Mr. Hieu's role is to be the leader of the Bai Choi festival, considered the soul of the game. Whether the Bai Choi festival is lively, exciting, and attracts players and viewers depends on Mr. Hieu's singing/calling talent. In each Bai Choi festival in Quang Nam, Hieu is usually a male and female pair who sings in response, adding humorous jokes, juggling together, and having unique improvisations, increasing communication with players, making the Bai Choi festival even more exciting.

Question:Artist, please tell me which melody is most popular in Bai Choi singing, past and present?

Reply :


The Bai Choi singing/calling melodies are usually based on six (6) main melodies: Ancient Spring Girl, New Spring Girl, Ancient Version, Old Xang Xe (luy), New Xang Xe (dung), Ho Quang (also known as Ho Quang).

Question : Do you often teach these songs to your students?

Reply:I still mainly teach these tunes to my students, but I have added new notes to the tunes.

Question:When teaching singing to students, do you tap the beat or the rhythm?

Reply:When I teach singing to students I only teach them to tap the beat, never the beat.

2.3.3. Interview with artist Thai Quy

Question: Could you please tell me about the lyrics in the Bai Choi singing that ancient artists often used ?

Reply:

The poetry in Bài Chòi is four-word and five-word poems in the rhythm of the verse and the most popular are lục bát (6/8), lục bát variations, and song thất lục bát. The lyrics of Bài Chòi have a simple one-verse structure and a two-verse structure in the form of folk songs with riddles and solutions. The lyrics must be rich in imagery, narrative and lyrical, creating associations for the listener to guess the card that is about to come out and understand the content of the Bài Chòi lyrics.

Question: Artist, please tell me about the lyrics in Ly Quang Nam, what poetic forms did ancient artists often use ?

Reply:

For Ly, he often uses the six-eight, seven-seven, six-eight, seven-word, eight-word, four-word, and sometimes mixed verse forms. The lyrics are very rustic and simple, and sometimes contain philosophy of life, sometimes


when interweaving popular literature with scholarly literature as well as bearing the characteristic local language of the region .

2.3.4. Interview with People's Artist Tu Minh Hiep

Question:Artist, please tell us how you choose and arrange the content of teaching folk songs?

Reply:In a teaching session on Quang Nam folk songs in general, and Bai Choi folk songs in particular, we often combine teaching at least two different genres, using easy-to-sing genres such as Ly, Ho, and Ve songs with simple, easy-to-learn melodies to teach first.

Question:Dear artist, when teaching folk songs like Bài Chòi, how do you teach difficult songs with many vibratos?

Reply:When teaching more difficult folk songs, we usually teach them later, teaching the easy songs first to create momentum for the students to approach the folk melodies from easy to difficult. This helps them not to be discouraged and creates excitement for them to learn. At the same time, when encountering many slurs, we have to sing slowly, each detail, each word, training the students to listen carefully, practice carefully, and sing well before moving on to the next sentence.

2.3.5. Interview with artist Tuyet Suong

Question:Could you please tell us about the difficulties in teaching folk songs Bai Choi and Ly to students?

Reply:

About the difficulties: There is only 1 music lesson per week for each class, so we usually only focus on teaching according to the content distribution of the Ministry of Education and Training. Teachers often have difficulty and little time to integrate


Teaching folk songs to students in regular classes. To teach, the school must organize extracurricular activities, or establish a Folk Song Club to organize more activities, but the current school conditions are still difficult in terms of facilities, and have not yet purchased traditional musical instruments, props or specialized rooms. There are not many music teachers who are knowledgeable, know how to sing and teach folk songs.

Question:Artist, please tell us about the advantages of teaching Bai Choi singing to students?

Reply:

In terms of advantages: Quang Nam is one of the cradles of folk art of Bài Chòi, Ho, Ve and Lý tunes. In addition, the local language is also an advantage to be able to convey those folk tunes to students in schools. Furthermore, the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee also issued an official dispatch directing the People's Committees of districts and cities to implement the pilot teaching of folk songs in some schools with conditions.
