INTRODUCTION

1. Reason for choosing the topic

Blues originated from West African songs brought by black slaves to North America, especially the Mississippi Delta region of the American South, and developed strongly in African American slave communities. Later, this type of music gradually attracted white American youth and influenced Jazz, Big Bands, Ragtime, etc. in North America.

Blues is a type of music created by black slaves. The lyrics in Blues songs express pain and loss. Besides, there are also songs that talk about luck when overcoming difficulties, talking about human emotions when escaping from their own disappointment. Blues created the foundation for the appearance and development of Jazz genre later.

In recent years, Blues has strongly influenced Vietnamese music with new sound colors and new styles. With its very own musical colors and high improvisational characteristics when performing, it requires musicians to think creatively and create their own style. In addition, Blues is also applied to singing accompaniment, so it is widely accepted by listeners, especially young people who have studied music.

Hai Phong College of Culture, Arts and Tourism is a school with a long tradition and achievements, always at the forefront of art education, especially music education for the young generation in the city. Like a number of art schools across the country, this place focuses on training intermediate professional majors such as Vocal Music, Musical Instruments (electronic keyboard, guitar...), Music Pedagogy,... In recent years, the electronic keyboard class has attracted the attention of many students.

Students who are eligible to study this major must have graduated from secondary school and must have a certain level of keyboard playing ability to pass the entrance exam. The school's intermediate level of electronic keyboard training lasts 4 years.

After years of honing, students in the electronic keyboard class have made great strides in their understanding and ability to play music. In the program, in addition to classical works, students are also exposed to Jazz music, practicing works in the Swing, Ragtime, Boogie, etc. styles, but lack Blues music. This is a difficult type of music to appreciate, however, many students are still proactive, wanting to conquer the appeal of this genre, so they have researched and explored it on their own. To be able to play Blues, students' self-study often takes a lot of time, is ineffective, they practice with the wrong techniques, and they do not understand Blues music sufficiently and correctly.

Having studied the intermediate electronic keyboard class at school and becoming a teacher in charge of teaching this subject, I realized that students are very passionate about learning and practicing works in the Blues genre. However, in the electronic keyboard training at school, there is no curriculum or system of Blues teaching methods suitable for the level and aspirations of the students. I always worry and hope that the next generation of students can practice the genre they love systematically. Therefore, within the limits and certain capabilities of myself, I chose the topic of Teaching Blues to students of the electronic keyboard class at the Hai Phong Intermediate School of Culture, Arts and Tourism for my master's thesis in Music Teaching Theory and Methods.
