INTRODUCTION

1. Reason for choosing the topic

Any country or nation in the world seeks to preserve and protect its own cultural identity, because if it loses its identity, it will no longer be a country or a nation. The cultural identity of each nation has contributed to human civilization, making it more diverse and richer. To achieve the goal of building an advanced Vietnamese culture with strong national identity, a very important issue is to preserve the national cultural identity in international integration. Preserving the national cultural identity is of special importance in the development of the country in general and in the development of literature in particular.

Compared to the history of national literature, modern Vietnamese ethnic minority literature is still very young. After nearly seventy years of formation and development, it has truly become a close-knit, unique, and distinctive part; it has developed richly, diversely, and contributed greatly to the overall appearance of national literature. Many ethnic minority literary works have won high awards and have been warmly received by public opinion.

Cao Duy Son is one of the typical writers of contemporary ethnic minority literature. His works are imbued with national cultural identity in both aspects: content and artistic form. Perhaps that is also the main reason why the writer has won many high and valuable awards: A prize of the Vietnam Ethnic Minority Literature and Arts Award in 1993 with the novel The Wanderer ; Award of the Vietnam Writers Association in 1997 with the short story collection Stories in Co Sau Valley ; B prize of the Vietnam Ethnic Minority Literature and Arts Association in 2002 with the short story collection Human-shaped Clouds . A prize of the Vietnam Ethnic Minority Literature and Arts Award in 2007 with the novel Dan Troi ; Award of the Vietnam Writers Association in 2008 with the short story collection Ngoi Nha Xua Ben Suoi . Especially

In particular, in 2009, he received the Southeast Asian Literature Award with this short story collection.

However, up to now, Cao Duy Son's works have not been studied much. In particular, the issue of national identity in Cao Duy Son's works has not been studied as a specialized, in-depth issue.

For the above reasons, we chose to research the topic : National cultural identity in Cao Duy Son's works.

2. Problem history

Although he has won many awards, Cao Duy Son's name is still quite new in the literary world. Therefore, there are not many research works on Cao Duy Son's works (according to our statistics, there are nearly 40 large and small works), mainly articles and comments by some contemporary authors and researchers.

Through the survey, we found that: The vast majority of articles, research papers... go into depth to study and introduce the author and his work (mainly in the short story genre), in which the most articles are the short story collection " Old House by the Stream " by Cao Duy Son. The issue of national identity in Cao Duy Son's works has also been mentioned but there has not been any in-depth research, opinions are scattered in articles and comments. Based on the results of statistics and classification, we found that the issue of national identity in Cao Duy Son's works is affirmed in two aspects.

In terms of content:

Chairman of the Writers Association Huu Thinh in the article The Executive Committee Conference has agreed on an important program of literary life” mentioned the short story collection The Old House by the Stream by Cao Duy Son. He highly appreciated this collection of stories, especially the “quality” that creates the national identity of the collection: “ The Old House by the Stream by author Cao Duy Son brings to readers a dense, fresh life of the people of the mountains, both ancient and modern.

"Dignified, simple, honest, not losing oneself in difficult, painful circumstances" [60].

Author T. Luyen in the article The Old House by the Stream - a vivid picture of the life of the people in the mountains also mentioned the national identity in terms of the content of the short story collection. The author affirmed: This is " a collection of stories about the life of the simple, rustic people in the mountains, with typical cultural features... Reading the short story collection The Old House by the Stream, readers will have the opportunity to learn more about the unique customs of the people in Co Sau town " [22].

Writer Trung Trung Dinh expressed his feelings when reading Cao Duy Son's first short stories in the article Cao Duy Son - from the civet to the bear hunter in the old forest . What he remembered most in those works was " the mountain atmosphere, both dreamy and deep because of the beauty of nature that captivates people, attracts people, supports people from the mysterious and solemn places of the old forest, deep caves, to when they return to the natural, innocent life of the community... Cao Duy Son's literature is rich in images, rich in the intoxication of people who are intoxicated by nature " [29,486-487]. According to the author: that mountain atmosphere partly contributes to expressing the national identity in Cao Duy Son's works.

Author Phan Chinh An in the article " In Search of the Beauty of Nostalgia" also mentioned the short story collection " The Old House by the Stream ". He said that with this short story collection, Cao Duy Son " made a spiritual pilgrimage to find the ancient beauty of Phijia Phu Mountain, of Co Sau Valley with the burning dream of "introducing that poor countryside, making its name in literature" . Coming to "The Old House by the Stream ", readers will " get acquainted with strange places such as Cun Stream, Pao Lo, Au Lam, Nieng Village, Nhom Nhem, Hang Vai, Pac Ga, Co Lau... feel the atmosphere and flavor of the "very Tay" mountainous region. The atmosphere,

That very unique flavor first spreads in many good customs , then in " the beauty of the soul and personality of the Tay people "[1].

Nguyen Minh Truong in his master's thesis on Literature Short stories on the theme of ethnic minorities in the Northern mountainous region (through the works of Cao Duy Son, Do Bich Thuy and Nguyen Huy Thiep) delved into the image of life and people in Cao Duy Son's short stories. The author of the thesis affirmed: With a unique style, Cao Duy Son's short stories " have created vivid, rich pictures of the wonderful life in the world of mountains and forests..." [57].

Author Song Lam in the article Cao Duy Son, with a gentle yet sharp writing style, mentioned the richness of customs and practices in all of Cao Duy Son's works: " From novels... to short story collections... Cao Duy Son's pen has sketched vivid pictures of life in the highlands of the Northern mountainous region. There are dense layers of traditional ethnic culture that have been forged over hundreds of generations. These are the wedding customs of the Tay people, the custom of using the child's name to replace the mother's given name, the custom of going to the love market... in January so that old lovers can express their feelings, recall memories..., the custom of singing Khai Vai Xuan... " [19].

In terms of art:

In the article Dawn has a drop of dew, author Do Duc focused on the short story collection Old House by the Stream . And the language of the work is the most noticeable. Do Duc commented: “ The writing in this collection by Cao Duy Son... is not sophisticated, at first glance it feels clumsy and clumsy. But every story has sentences that startle people about the sharpness in observing life and calling it out in the language of the people of their region”. The author assessed that “those sentences are sparkling pearls” [8].

Critic Lam Tien in the article " How to express people and mountain life in Cao Duy Son's works" is also very interested in the art of using language in Cao Duy Son's works. He said that " The flexibility
