1. Reason for choosing the topic

INTRODUCTION

In the current trend, along with the development of economic sectors, tourism has gradually become an important industry, holding a key position in bringing economic - social and environmental efficiency in many countries around the world as well as in Vietnam in general and Can Tho city in particular.

Can Tho is a centrally-governed city and also the center of the Mekong Delta. The city has always been a leader in the economic, educational, cultural and social fields of the entire region. Not only has it demonstrated its central role, in recent years Can Tho has also been known as an attractive tourist center for both domestic and foreign tourists. Taking advantage of its existing strengths in natural and human resources, labor resources, infrastructure and technical facilities, Can Tho has strongly developed eco-tourism, which is a fairly popular type of tourism in Can Tho in recent times. With many favorable conditions and unique characteristics, it has made many strides and achieved significant results in this field, contributing positively to the economic development of Can Tho. Besides the strengths that have been exploited, Can Tho ecotourism still has many untapped potentials as well as many limitations, sometimes overlapping in the process of developing ecotourism types with other provinces in the region, not creating a unique feature for Can Tho ecotourism, sometimes creating boredom for tourists. Given the above situation, I decided to choose the topic: "Ecotourism in Can Tho City - Current situation and solutions" as my graduation thesis.

2. Research history of the topic

Nowadays, when the scientific and technological revolution develops strongly, industrial civilization expands globally, the living environment changes, the human demand for tourism also changes. People want to return to nature, immerse themselves in nature, want to go to nature reserves, cultural villages, and historical sites.

historical relics as well as unique cultural features... Since then, ecotourism has become increasingly popular, creating the basis for research projects on ecotourism.

In the world , research programs on ecotourism have become very popular in recent years. Research projects on ecotourism by the United Nations Environment Program (1979), the Ecotourism Association (1992), and the World Tourism Organization (WTO 1994). In particular, 2002 was the year of international ecotourism with the World Summit on Ecotourism held in Quebec City, Canada. This conference was an initiative of the WTO and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Typical are research projects on the theoretical basis of ecotourism development by Wright (1993), Glaser (1996), and Holden (1999). The above research topics on ecotourism are an important basis for the assessment, exploitation, management, and orientation of ecotourism development. In Vietnam , ecotourism is a relatively new concept but has received much attention recently. The issue of exploiting ecotourism aims at conservation and sustainable development, while improving the lives of local people, in which environmental education is a fundamental factor. In recent years, international tourists often target tropical countries with the aim of returning to nature. In 1995, the Vietnam Institute for Tourism Development Research carried out the topic "Current status and orientations for planning tourism development in the Mekong Delta", this study based on tourism potential proposed types of tourism in the Mekong Delta such as: river tourism, garden tours, entertainment and coastal tourism,... In 1998, the research work of Phan Huy Xu and Tran Van Thanh on "Evaluation of natural tourism resources and orientation for exploiting ecotourism in the Mekong Delta", this work built a scientific basis for designing routes and ecotourism clusters in the Mekong Delta. In 2000, the scientific article on "Orientation for planning natural ecotourism in the Mekong Delta" by Tran Van Thanh and Pham Thi Ngoc investigated and supplemented 8 natural ecotourism sites, designed 13 routes, 5 natural ecotourism clusters

Mekong Delta. In 2002, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Trung Luong with the research work "Ecotourism: theoretical issues and practical development in Vietnam" mentioned the theoretical issues of ecotourism as well as evaluated the potential for ecotourism development in Vietnam. In addition, there are many other research works: Tram Chim National Park (1999), Phu Quoc (2001), U Minh Thuong (2001).

In Can Tho , ecotourism has been given attention with specific projects: Phu Sa tourism development project phase 2 (2010-2020) of Can Tho Department of Culture - Sports and Tourism with an investment capital of more than 30 billion VND, the Mekong - Can Tho National Tourism Year 2008 was also held here with the theme: "The Mekong River Garden" which took place grandly, imbued with the historical culture and traditions of the Southern region, introducing the development potential of Can Tho city and the Mekong Delta region.

The work "The Mekong Delta, the land of people" by author Tran Van Quang has depicted the hidden beauty of the Mekong Delta and the cultural characteristics of the people here, looking back at the overall picture of the tourism system of Can Tho city.

In the book "Floating Markets of the Mekong Delta" by Nham Hung, he outlined floating markets, the unique features in the lifestyle of people living on the river, especially in those typical floating markets, he mentioned Cai Rang - Can Tho floating market, one of the markets that develops an effective and typical type of eco-tourism in the region.

The work “Can Tho River Culture” by Tran Van Nam has generalized the spiritual culture, material culture, and cuisine of Can Tho. Or in the work “Can Tho past and present” also by author Tran Van Nam wrote about the formation process of Can Tho such as: history, geography, historical figures, relics, anecdotes, cultural arts, religious activities, and craft village activities.

5. Research viewpoints and methods of the topic

5.1. Research perspective

- Synthetic perspective: this is a perspective that aims to comprehensively study all factors affecting Can Tho ecotourism, study the impact relationship of natural conditions, tourism resources, socio-economic factors and their fluctuations on Can Tho ecotourism, from which it is possible to make recommendations.

Orientation and solutions to develop Can Tho ecotourism in a reasonable and effective way.

- Historical perspective: in the research process, it is necessary to pay attention to the historical origin of the research topic, thereby explaining the formation and development of the topic, specifically here, considering the development of Can Tho ecotourism in the past, the current development status and proposing development orientations in the future.

- Ecological perspective: the nature of ecotourism is based on the natural environment, in the research process, we must pay close attention to the interaction between tourism activities and the ecological environment. We must comprehensively consider the impact of the environment on ecotourism activities and the influence of tourism activities on the ecological environment. We must forecast the risks and harms that tourism activities can cause to the environment in order to have measures to protect the environment to ensure the development of Can Tho ecotourism activities.

- Perspectives on sustainable tourism development: sustainable tourism is often considered equal to ecotourism. However, in the research process, sustainable tourism must be considered to have a broader meaning than protecting the natural environment, which is to consider in the most reasonable and satisfactory way the factors of people, communities, culture, customs, lifestyle, etc. to ensure tourism development both in the present and the future.

5.2. Research methods

During the implementation of the topic, the following research methods were used:

- Comparative synthesis evaluation method: in most of the available documents are related to the issue of Can Tho ecotourism, most of the documents are very broad and difficult to obtain specifically for a research topic, so based on these documents, analyze, synthesize, compare and draw out what is necessary and important for the topic, rearrange in a scientific and logical order.

- Statistical and chart methods: when collecting documents related to tourism in general and Can Tho ecotourism in particular, the source of documents is very diverse and rich.

Therefore, this method helps to select, process and set up a system to serve the research. Information and data sources are collected from many sources: statistical agencies, books, scientific research articles, the internet, etc. to ensure a sufficient and accurate amount of information to meet the research topic. In addition, the chart method is also used, based on statistical data sources to build charts, showing numbers in an intuitive, vivid way, making it easy to see the problem and also to illustrate the problem.

- Cartographic method: this is a traditional research method in Geography, reflecting spatial characteristics, distribution of tourism resources, infrastructure, technical facilities serving tourism. Using maps showing terrain, soil, administration to tourism and economic maps of Can Tho, is the basis for analyzing and discovering the operating rules of the tourism territory system, on that basis, giving directions for development and organization of tourism activities in the future.

- Field method: this is a necessary method for a study on ecotourism in a specific area, besides that it can be combined with the sociological investigation method to study the needs of tourists, grasp the preferences of tourists through the form of interviews and surveys. This method helps to grasp the potential market, the target market, grasp the aspirations not only of tourists but also of those working in tourism services and tourism management.

In addition, many methods are used: discussion, interviewing teachers and friends, using geographic software to create the necessary maps.
