1.2.1. The role of building political awareness for students

First, building political awareness contributes to comprehensive human development.

President Ho Chi Minh pointed out: “To build socialism, there must be socialist people” [30, p.604.]. In educating human personality, talent and virtue are two important factors that go together, which are indispensable contents to become a comprehensive person. The highest goal of comprehensive education is to create a class of people with full capacity and qualities to meet the increasingly high demands of the times. Ho Chi Minh pointed out: “In education and learning, we must pay attention to all aspects: revolutionary ethics, socialist enlightenment, culture, technology, labor and production”. Building political awareness for students is one of the important contents in comprehensive education because in addition to professional knowledge, students need to cultivate ethics, lifestyle, ideology, foster patriotism and concern for the community... From there, step by step, help them gradually establish political mettle and be steadfast with the chosen ideal goals. This is an important task, the basis for us to be able to train a new generation of cadres who are both professionally competent, politically steadfast, and have revolutionary ethics, thereby bringing the country to a high level of development suitable for the period of promoting international integration.

In the period of accelerating industrialization, Vietnamese people also fully possess the beauty of people in the new era, which is the image of people with new positive political qualities, revolutionary ethics; good expertise and professionalism; creative ability and constantly quickly and promptly receiving new knowledge and being able to flexibly apply that knowledge to bring high efficiency in all activities... Those qualities are the result of the training process and self-training, self-practice through practice. Therefore, our Party as well as many countries in the world always consider education and training as a top priority national policy for comprehensive development. The political capacity of students is a positive quality of people in general, it is shown in the steadfastness of ideology, steadfastness in political stance and viewpoint, not showing confusion or wavering in the face of all political fluctuations and complex impacts of social life as well as personal difficulties and challenges, and absolute loyalty to the ideal of national independence associated with socialism. That capacity is also shown in daring to think, daring to do, daring to take responsibility to realize the chosen goals and ideals. Thanks to the process of building political awareness, the political capacity of students is formed and developed. That mettle is demonstrated in loyalty to the socialist regime, in true patriotism, in steadfast revolutionary stance, in steadfastness in the face of enemy plots and attacks, and in not being confused or wavering in the face of changes in the world political situation.

Building political awareness contributes to implementing a healthy lifestyle, preserving and promoting the national cultural identity for students. Building in students the spirit of honesty, respect for humanity, respect for the law and labor discipline, community conventions, environmental protection, fighting against all types of social evils and negativity, actively eliminating backward customs that hinder the development of a progressive society... Building in them the right attitude, uncompromisingly fighting against bad habits, condemning uncultured and unethical behavior. By participating in cultural, artistic, sports movements,... will contribute to raising awareness, consciousness of preserving and developing an advanced culture imbued with national identity; fighting against all new cultural trends with negative colors, not suitable for the good customs of the country.

Building political awareness to guide practical actions of humanity, progress, revolution, science, creativity... for students. Doing well the work of building political awareness helps students to be enlightened with the spirit of Marxism-Leninism to contribute to "reforming the world", forming enthusiastic young generations to be pioneers in various fields, with good cognitive ability and high political awareness, with the courage to overcome difficulties, rise up in their careers, strongly promoting the revolutionary shock tradition of previous generations. They actively contribute to maintaining social order and security; enriching individuals, families and society thanks to positive results in participating in movements.

Second, building political awareness contributes to training a generation of young cadres to succeed the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party.

Since its inception and leadership of the nation's revolutionary cause, our Party has always promoted the role of youth in general and students of the Fire Prevention and Fighting University in particular. The spirit of the Party's Central Resolution 4 (Session VII) on youth work has assessed: "Youth is the vanguard force in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland". Whether the country's renovation is successful or not, whether the country can stand shoulder to shoulder with other countries in the region and the world or not, whether the country's revolution can firmly follow the path of socialism or not depends largely on the youth force, on the work of nurturing and training the young generation; youth work is a matter of survival for the country, one of the factors that determine the success or failure of the revolution". According to the Resolution of the 7th Central Conference (Session X) of the Party, the importance of youth was once again affirmed and a specific goal was set: "Continue to build a generation of Vietnamese youth with patriotism, national self-reliance, steadfast in the ideals of national independence and socialism; have morality,

revolutionary virtue, awareness of law observance, civilized life, for the community... Building a generation of young people who are both red and expert in all fields, loyally and excellently inheriting the glorious revolutionary cause of our Party and people. Building political awareness strengthens students' belief in the leadership of the Party, in the chosen path and increasingly better implementing the cause of national renewal. When they have firm belief, they will decide on the direction, goals and effectiveness of their activities, be active in studying, working, making practical contributions to the country and the whole society.

Building political awareness for students is the process of educating the Party's revolutionary ideals of studiousness, thirst for knowledge, mastery of knowledge, patriotism, love of socialism and the tradition of national solidarity. Having the right awareness, studying, working and being active in work will help them move towards noble values such as: Compassion, altruism and the qualities of truth, goodness and beauty; help them steadfastly fight against evil, bad habits, backwardness in society and be ready to sacrifice their interests (including their lives) for that noble ideal.

The great goal and ideal throughout our Party and State is “National independence associated with socialism” chosen by President Ho Chi Minh and our people. Therefore, building political awareness will give students a scientific basis and absolute loyalty to that ideal.

In the general trend of today's era, the conflict between pragmatic lifestyle and beautiful lifestyle is increasing. In particular, pragmatic lifestyle is increasingly present and constantly affects the young generation. Therefore, building a life ideal has great significance in preserving and promoting the good cultural identities of the nation, with ethical traditions, familiar customs, and positive aspects of Vietnamese people. Students are the majority force in our country today, with a dynamic, creative, quick-to-adapt nature to new mechanisms, with the will to be independent, self-reliant, and responsible in the process of establishing a career. Building political awareness helps them strongly promote those positive aspects, have enough political courage, and have a noble lifestyle.

Third, building political awareness actively contributes to the struggle in the ideological and cultural fields.

Building political awareness for students is building morality, revolutionary ideals, lifestyle, and beliefs, contributing to creating a person with deep faith, loyalty to the Party, and a firm stance in the face of all challenges. This is very important content to help students have the courage and capacity to preserve and promote the ideology of the proletariat, protect the Party, the State and the socialist regime, along with the precious traditional cultural values of the nation and have the courage to fight against the "peaceful evolution" strategy of hostile forces in many increasingly dangerous and sophisticated ways.

The plot and trick of “peaceful evolution” is part of the counter-revolutionary strategy of hostile forces of a global nature. It is a new form of war, not directly participating in the battlefield but very sinister and its consequences affect the global scale. They use a combination of many methods but mainly to find ways to cause internal conflicts within the opponent to gradually accelerate the process of “evolution” into “self-evolution”.

In the context of the world and the region continuing to have complex developments, with unpredictable factors, the task of building political awareness for students is facing great opportunities and challenges. Hostile forces continue to intensify their plot of “peaceful evolution”, often using the tricks of “religion”, “democracy”, “human rights”… to interfere in our country’s internal affairs. The enemy has carried out a series of plots and tricks to sabotage our Party, State and people in all areas of social life… One of the targets they aim at is the youth, by inciting and enticing young people to learn a pragmatic lifestyle,

tarnish morality, misunderstand the path to socialism, have a distorted view of politics and ideology, deviate from the Party's ideal goals and lose faith in the Party.

With the intention of exploiting the loopholes in the cultural and economic exchange policy during the open-door period, the enemy used many war tactics in many aspects and forms, introducing into the young generation trivial tastes and easy-going concepts of freedom, in order to make society chaotic and gradually carry out the plot to overthrow the government. Hostile and reactionary forces took advantage of the open-door to infiltrate "values" according to their concepts. For example, using the standards of "human rights and American-style freedom" to impose and control the spiritual life of our society; introducing pragmatic lifestyles, extreme individualism... to erode the good moral values of our people, especially the young generation, through the mass media... Building political awareness makes students aware of the plots of exploitation by hostile forces so that they can proactively prevent themselves from being lured and exploited.

Doing well the work of building political awareness will help students understand and have a positive attitude of criticizing and condemning bad habits and vices in society such as: The state of "unculture" causing many social value standards to be disturbed and changed in a bad direction; the situation of trampling on moral traditions for money and personal reputation; the deterioration of teacher-student and friend relationships; the evils of prostitution, drugs, gambling, etc.

Building political awareness also helps students acquire moral qualities and a healthy lifestyle in all circumstances, under the objective impact of the market mechanism in our country and the plot of "peaceful evolution" and anti-socialism in our country by hostile forces. Educating to improve moral qualities and a healthy lifestyle is not only about propaganda, exhortation, and calling on students to do virtuous and meaningful work, not to harm others, to live with meaning and love, to sacrifice personal interests to serve the interests of the collective... but the core issue is to equip students with a world view.

Thanks to that, students realize the value, meaning, and purpose of their own lives and the whole society, know how to appreciate and love independence and freedom. Moreover, it is also considered a basis to prevent the individualistic view of lifestyle, pragmatism, and absolutism of money that hostile forces sow in today's young generation. They will know how to promote the spirit of fighting to protect the truth, protect the right, the good, condemn evil, the bad, and the negative; have a resolute attitude to fight, prevent and repel all negativity, depravity and degradation in morality and lifestyle in schools as well as in society.

1.2.2. Characteristics of building political awareness for students

In essence, building political awareness for students of universities and colleges in the national education system in general is to provide scientific knowledge and ideology in the political field to contribute mainly to the formation of worldview and scientific methodology for students. This combines many other fields of science to combine political and social activities to foster communist outlook on life, revolutionary ideals and belief in socialist values so that students can promote their proactiveness in the work of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland. And this is also the characteristic of building political awareness for students. This characteristic is shown in the following 3 aspects:

Political knowledge : Students are systematically equipped with political theory knowledge while sitting in the classroom. At each level of college and university training in the national education system of our country in general, including the Fire Prevention University, students must study political theory subjects.

In the early years, with subjects such as: Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, Ho Chi Minh Thought, Revolutionary Path of the Communist Party of Vietnam... Through studying these subjects, students are able to grasp the basic contents of the ideological foundation of the Vietnamese political system. From there, they become people equipped with a fairly systematic background of knowledge. Most universities and colleges are often concentrated in urban centers, so students have access to economic, political, cultural and social activities, so they have higher political knowledge than other young people of the same age.

Political belief: Thanks to being equipped with full knowledge of political knowledge along with living and studying in a school belonging to the armed forces with full discipline but very active and dynamic, students have the conditions to build political belief. Along with the preferential policies of the Party and State towards students, the activities of organizations... will easily form political belief for students. Students themselves are the ones who have the right to be proactive in thinking and exploring, but they have the knowledge and courage to distinguish right from wrong, at the same time they are young, dynamic, and active people, so when students have political belief, they will become the main force when participating in general movement activities.

Political behavior: In practice, students in general are very active in participating in movements to demonstrate their true patriotism. Through these mass movements, they feel confident that these movements are carried out anytime, anywhere from their workplaces to residential areas in terms of culture, politics, ethics, etc. Students are also intelligent and responsible people in regular elections, the votes to elect their representatives in political and social organizations such as the School Youth Union Executive Committee, Trade Unions and state power agencies such as the National Assembly, People's Councils at all levels, it shows their political trust in the organization and the state.
