Flowers and ornamental plants help people reduce stress, feel more relaxed and happier. That is the conclusion of scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School after a large-scale study on the role of flowers in human behavior. Dr. Nancy Etcoff - who led the study - revealed that in homes with the presence of fresh flowers, the members living there tend to be more sympathetic and tolerant of each other. Their risk of falling into a state of stress, anxiety or depression is much lower than those living in spaces lacking flowers and plants.

“Many studies have shown that receiving flowers makes people feel happier,” Dr. Etcoff continued. “Try spending a few days surrounded by fresh flowers and you may notice a positive change in your mood and well-being.”

According to research by scientists from Harvard University, the presence of flowers in your home brings the following benefits:

Flowers make people more sociable and tolerant: Research participants were asked to spend up to a week in a space decorated with fresh flowers. The results showed that these people tended to be more relaxed, pleasant, and more likely to show friendly gestures to people around them than usual.

Flowers help us dispel all worries and sadness: after a few days of living in a living space with lots of fresh flowers, research participants said they felt more optimistic and had less negative emotions in their hearts.

Throughout the study, the majority of these people preferred to have fresh flowers in their kitchen, dining room, and living room – their favorite spaces at home. They expressed that their own fresh flowers were the first thing they wanted to see when they woke up in the morning.

The presence of flowers makes us feel more excited, happier and more energetic at work: research also shows that once living in a place with lots of fresh flowers, people are more likely to feel happier and work more enthusiastically in the office.

“Our research strongly suggests that flowers play a positive role in human health, helping us to feel better and live better,” concluded Dr. Etcoff.

So, if you are looking for a simple way to improve your mental health, to be more optimistic and work more effectively, make a habit of displaying fresh flowers and taking care of them. As scientists say, just a few pots of flowers or ornamental plants in your living and working space are enough to make the difference you want.
