2.2 INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE BANKING SERVICES AT JOINT STOCK COMMERCIAL BANK FOR FOREIGN TRADE OF VIETNAM

2.2.1 Service development history

In November 2001, Vietcombank began implementing online banking services for customers with the following functions: viewing account balances and transactions, viewing credit card statements and transactions.

In December 2004, the bank's Board of Directors assigned the Technology Project Management Department to reorganize service provision and take charge of developing this service channel.

In January 2005, Vietcombank temporarily suspended service registration via the Internet to resolve the remaining customers (about 20,000 customers); continued to develop legal documents to regulate service provision and complete the service provision program.

On May 24, 2006, VCB - iB@nking service was officially reopened, allowing customers to register for the service at Vietcombank transaction points.

Since May 15, 2009, in addition to information query services, customers can also make payments for internet banking services.

On March 10, 2010, Vietcombank officially began providing financial services through an online banking channel for rent called VCB-iB@nking. This

is the first bank to deploy this service in Vietnam. The service allows individual customers of units that cooperate with Vietcombank (finance, insurance, securities, telecommunications companies, etc.) to transfer money to these units to pay interest, loan principal, securities investment, insurance premiums, service fees or other payment contents. All payment transactions are made in Vietnamese Dong. With this service, individual customers who have registered to use Vietcombank's VCB-iB@nking service and are customers of units that cooperate to deploy Financial Services with Vietcombank can perform financial transactions with each other via computers with Internet connection.

2.2.2 Security system of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade

* Security using electronic code generation system using RSA technology:

The RSA electronic authentication code generation system includes interface software and electronic code generation devices to enhance security tools when accessing the information technology system and services provided by Vietcombank. Specifically, the RSA system is an access security solution that uses 2 factors: password (PIN created by the user) and a random number sequence (consisting of 6 digits - created by the electronic code generation device, displayed and changed periodically (60 seconds) used simultaneously at the time the user accesses the system. This PIN combination and this number sequence create a number sequence that becomes a dynamic password (called a passcode). The user must enter this passcode combination instead of entering a fixed password as before.

Using an electronic code generator when accessing ensures high security by using two factors simultaneously during the authentication process to avoid password detection or disable unauthorized access in case the passcode is eavesdropped.

*Security by electronic certificate system

Vietcombank has purchased a security certificate from VeriSign, the world's leading web security service provider. Currently, information on Vietcombank's website has been encrypted with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. With a 128-bit SSL Certificate, Vietcombank's website security along with VCB - iB@nking online banking service has been guaranteed and certified by VeriSign. With the Secure Site Seal service, customers can click on the VeriSign icon on Vietcombank's website to check the security and reliability of the website. This SSL security mechanism is implemented by encrypting sensitive information during transactions. And each SSL Certificate contains trusted information that allows access through the format from the provider. This technology is widely used on the Internet today. SSL Certificate contains a public key and a private key. The public key is used to encrypt information and the private key is used to decrypt the encrypted information. When a web browser visits a protected domain, thanks to SSL, the information is encrypted and the connection from the client browser to the server is secure.

Along with the development of science and technology and social awareness, the popularity of the Internet is increasing rapidly.

( Source : Summary report of Vietcombank Long An branch, 2013)

For Internet Banking services, statistics show that customers are increasingly

more interested and used with the number of transactions increasing rapidly over the years. By the end of 2009, the number of transactions was 336 with the amount achieved being 1,535,619,668 VND. In this year, most of the transfer transactions were transactions within the system. The most impressive thing was in 2010, from the number of 336 transactions with a modest amount of 1,535,619,668 VND in 2009, in 2010 the number of transactions increased 8 times, the transaction amount jumped dramatically to 24 times compared to the previous year. From 2010 to 2012, the number of transactions in parallel with the transaction amount continued to increase over the years.

Thus, we can see that over the years, the number of transactions via online banking has been constantly increasing, showing that customers' support for the service is very high, because of the safety and convenience of the service, customers can make money transfers anytime and anywhere. This also proves the speed for the potential development of non-cash payment services in the future.

Along with the constantly increasing number of money transfer transactions, the number of new accounts using internet banking also increases accordingly:

From the table, it can be seen that the number of people using online banking services increases every year. In 2009, there were 272 new users of this service, and in 2010, this number nearly doubled to 492 new users. In 2011 and 2012, the number of new registrations increased to an impressive 765 and 1,100, respectively. Thus, in the early years when this type of service was first deployed, the number of people who knew about and needed to use the service was very low, partly because Long An's economy was not yet developed, and the rate of people with computers connected to the internet at home was still very low, so they did not have the conditions to use this service. In recent years, when the internet has developed widely, as well as the higher demands for the transaction system for banks, the number of people accessing this service has tended to increase.

The increase in the number of transactions and the number of people using online banking services has proven the economy and efficiency of this service. At Vietcombank, on average, online transactions reduce at least 3 times the cost of direct transactions at the bank. In addition, this service reduces a series of cumbersome and complicated administrative procedures when having to transact directly at the bank. From the customer's perspective, it will reduce waiting time and reduce their opportunity costs; from the bank's perspective, it will reduce related paperwork costs and costs to hire counter staff if this type of online banking service develops.

However, along with the achievements, online banking services at Vietcombank still have limitations:

+ Compared with some domestic banks such as Asia Commercial Bank, Techcombank..., Vietcombank's online banking services are not really diverse. Online banking services at these banks are very diverse in terms of features.

functions such as: securities transactions, flexible savings products... Most recently, Asia Commercial Bank has also designed the online service "Document transactions, electronic authentication". Accordingly, customers who have signed credit transaction contracts, international payments, deposit services, foreign currency trading with ACB, when performing transactions, do not need to go to the transaction counter but only need to email the documents that have been authenticated with electronic signatures to the bank. Therefore, customers can save maximum time, human resources, costs, and at the same time can be assured of the accuracy and absolute security of transaction documents. In addition, banks such as HSBC, ANZ... have outstanding online banking services, the bank's products do not stop at simple money transfer transactions but also expand to the level of lending, batch payments, L/C opening requests... to meet the diverse needs of customers. Thus, compared to these banks, online banking services at Vietcombank are still very modest, mainly focusing on payment and money transfer.

+ In terms of online savings, in the 2 years of implementing this feature, the amount and number of transactions account for a small proportion compared to money transfer transactions. Most of the deposits are still small in nature. This proves that customers are still quite hesitant to save online due to fear of risks and they often feel more secure when holding a savings book in hand. In addition, online savings products are still limited in terms: 1, 3, 6 months, so they are not really flexible and diverse.
