Group 1 : 10 managers (HT, PHT, TTCM)

In general comments on the management group, we recorded the management situation of English teaching activities of the school and some information on the management of innovative teaching methods of English, mainly the current situation of managers shown through 04 functions: planning, organizing and directing implementation and checking, managing the conditions supporting the implementation of innovative teaching methods of English at the unit.

Group 2 : 10 English teachers

General comments on the group of subjects directly implementing the activities of innovation in teaching methods, we recorded the situation of English teaching and learning activities of the school and some information on the management of innovation activities of teaching methods of English subject.

Group 3 : 04 groups of students (24 students)

In general comments about the group of participants, we recorded information about English teaching and learning activities at school, through which the students expressed their wishes and aspirations about learning English and the difficulties they encountered and proposed some ideas, with the hope that the school and teachers would create favorable conditions for effective English learning at school.

We recorded the content of the direct interviews, saved them in writing, and summarized the content related to the situation we were researching.

+ Observation: observe specialized lessons, visit facilities and technical equipment serving the innovation of English teaching methods in secondary schools.

+ Product research : 2017-2018 school year plan of the principal, professional plan of the vice principal, professional group plan; lesson plan of the teacher, group meeting minutes, teacher observation sheet of the management staff.

2.2.4. Data processing method

+ Processing interview data: We selected opinions, compiled statistics by item with meaningful order, edited into short sentences some similar statements in the target groups, meaningful enough to quote (if necessary).

The analysis is done manually by reading and re-reading the contents that have been converted into text, grouping related ideas, and noting the opinions in sections and items.

+ Processing observation data: For this method, observing the actual teaching sessions of teachers to evaluate the organization and direction of professional groups to implement teaching of innovative teaching methods for English, teachers actively apply teaching methods to implement innovative teaching methods for English; through observing facilities and teaching aids (classrooms, laptops, TVs, projectors) of schools to collect more information about the provision of facilities and teaching aids to serve the innovation of English teaching methods in secondary schools, vocational schools, Vinh Long province.

+ Processing research data on activity products: Through researching products such as lesson plans, meeting minutes, and teacher observation sheets, we analyze products on the work of developing plans related to innovation in teaching methods for English, whether teachers' lesson preparation is in line with innovation in teaching methods, and whether exercises are designed for students to participate in appropriate learning activities.


In conjunction with active teaching methods, we have additional data to compare with the content we collected through questionnaire surveys and interviews, in order to clarify the current status of English teaching method innovation activities at schools.

The results of the data table in Table 2.7 show that: Teachers all rate the level of importance of implementing the goals of innovative teaching methods in English as "very important" (average score ranges from 318 to 3.48 and average score is 3.36).

However, there are different assessments of each specific goal in terms of implementation level. "Information" (Average score: 2.75) ranked 2nd. The objective "Developing English communication skills, using English as a communication tool in study and life" with an average score of 2.20 was rated by teachers as "Average", ranked 3rd.

To improve the quality of teaching and learning English, managers, teachers and students must identify the goals of innovating teaching methods. If they have the right awareness, they will work together to coordinate effectively in teaching and learning. The interview results are as follows: Managers 1, 2, 3, 5, teachers 5, teachers 6, teachers 8 said that the goal of innovating English teaching methods is to help students use English for basic communication and improve listening skills. Managers 6, 7, 9, teachers 3, teachers 9 said that currently, the need to know foreign languages ​​is considered important in applying for jobs and economic cooperation with foreign countries. Innovating English teaching methods in secondary schools is to help students apply this language naturally and confidently. Managers 8, 10, teachers 10 said that innovating English teaching methods is to stimulate students' interest in learning English, help them know how to exploit open learning resources via the Internet, stimulate students' thinking ability and creativity. Teacher 1 and Teacher 2 believe that the purpose is to help students learn how to study by themselves, research lessons by themselves, learn in groups, know how to present personal opinions and create many opportunities for students to practice speaking English and develop communication skills.

Interview results of student groups: Student group 1 and student group 3 said that they wanted to improve the quality of the entrance exam for grade 10, get points for promotion, and prepare to study the general 10-year English program. Student group 2 mentioned innovating teaching methods to create interest in learning, to be able to speak more English in class, and to be able to communicate with foreigners. Student group 4 realized that the goal of innovating teaching methods is to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for students.

In summary, through surveys and interviews with managers, teachers and students, the author commented that most of them identified the goals of innovation in English teaching and learning methods in the current period. However, there are also a few students who are not aware of the innovation goals, they are still concerned with the end-of-year learning results and the results of high school entrance exams.

The data results in Table 2.8 show that there is a high level of agreement in assessing the importance of the content of the orientation for innovation in teaching methods for English. The general assessment of teachers on the importance of the orientations is "Important" with the average score of 2.98.

The contents assessed as “Very important” include the contents under the orientation of “Innovating the way of implementing traditional teaching methods towards active learning”, specifically “Listening skills: combined with skills, listening exercises, common communication”; “Speaking skills: combined with phonetics, grammar, vocabulary and other skills, short conversations”; “Reading skills: developed through exercises (reading in detail, skimming, finding main ideas, finding necessary information)” and “New materials: practice through four skills, teaching integrated phonetics, grammar or vocabulary” with GPA ranging from 3.30 to 3.45. The contents assessed as “important” under the orientation of “Using coordinated teaching methods to active learning” are specifically as follows: “Teaching through organizing learners’ activities”; “Teaching focusing on training self-study methods”; “Enhancing individual learning, combining with cooperative learning”; “Combining teacher assessment and student self-assessment” with GPA ranging from 2.60 to 3.18 and “Writing skills: teaching purposeful writing (writing letters, application forms, writing reports, short paragraphs with prompts, writing topics, comments or opinions)”; “Teachers provide students with resources

The content assessed as "Less important" is "Students find resources, design websites; prepare documents using MS word; report" with an average score of 2.48, ranked last.

Regarding the level of implementation, the content of the orientation for innovation in teaching methods for English was rated as "good" by teachers (average score of 2.69). However, "listening skills" was rated as "average" by teachers (average score of 2.43). The content of "using a combination of teaching methods to actively promote learning" was rated as "good" by teachers (average score of 3.09); in which teachers rated the implementation of the content of "teaching through organizing activities of learners" at the level of "very good" (average score: 3.28); The content of "Teaching focusing on training self-study methods"; "Enhancing individual learning, combining with cooperative learning" and "Combining teacher assessment and self-assessment of learners" were rated as "Good" by teachers (average score ranging from 2.98 to 3.05). The content "Enhancing the application of IT and using modern technical means in teaching English" was evaluated by teachers as "average" with an average score of 2.25. Specifically, the application of IT and use of modern technical means by teachers was evaluated as "good" (average score was 2.88), and the implementation assessment for students was evaluated as "not good" (average score was 1.63).

To further study the level of importance and implementation of the orientation of innovation in teaching methods of English at secondary schools, Vinh Long City, Vinh Long Province, the author conducted interviews with managers, teachers and students. As a result of the interviews, the researcher perceived the general orientations as teachers actively applying teaching methods combined with traditional methods, teachers increasing the use of IT to prepare lessons and creating more opportunities for students to interact with each other and with teachers in English. CB1, CB2, CB4, CB6, CB7, GV8, GV4 said that teaching English in the direction of communication practice, focusing on active methods to develop cooperation skills, creative thinking ability, listening and speaking skills for students through skill lessons.
