With the wave of shifting to using smartphones taking place strongly in the world (at a general level of 50% in the Southeast Asia region, with Malaysia and Singapore reaching up to 90%), Vietnam will witness this trend reoccurring in the mobile phone market, opening up many business opportunities for smartphone businesses.
In the first three months of 2017, Vietnamese people spent nearly VND20,000 billion on smartphones, with smartphone sales reaching 3.6 million units. Of the 347.4 million smartphones sold globally in the first quarter of 2017 (according to IDC), Vietnamese people consumed 3.6 million smartphones. Specifically, Vietnamese people spent VND19.8 trillion on 3.64 million smartphones in the first three months of 2017, according to data from GfK. This figure increased compared to VND17.8 trillion for 3.47 million smartphones in the same period in 2016.

As usual, the month before the traditional Tet (Tet Ta) is the time when Vietnamese people prefer to buy new mobile phones, and it gradually decreases in the following months. Notably, there is a shift in price range in the decision to buy a smartphone of Vietnamese people. Specifically, besides the low-cost smartphone segment from 23 million VND accounting for the highest proportion, the mid-range and high-end smartphones including 4.5-6 million VND and 6-10 million VND are often
The two smartphones ranked second and third respectively in the most purchased smartphone group.
In addition, the habit of using large screen smartphones from 5 inches and above is increasingly reflected in the sales of smartphones with screens from 5 inches and above, up to 5 times higher than smartphones from 45 inches. Smartphones using Android are still the most popular choice compared to smartphones using other operating systems such as iPhone (iOS). The rate of Android smartphones exceeds 90% compared to iPhone by nearly 8%.
According to data from the FPT Shop retail chain, the best-selling smartphone groups in Q1 2017 include: Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, OPPO F1s, Galaxy J5 Prime, Galaxy J2 Prime, Oppo A39, iPhone 6 Plus 16GB, OPPO F1s (2017), OPPO Neo 7, OPPO A37 and iPhone 7 Plus 128GB. This list coincides with GfK's report on best-selling smartphone models in March and Q1, specifically, the two arch-rivals Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime and Oppo F1s in the 5.5-inch large-screen smartphone segment and the price segment of around 6 million VND lead the smartphone market in Vietnam.
In the global market, according to data released by IDC, the total number of smartphones sold in the first three months of 2017 (Q1) was 347.4 million units, up 4.3% over the same period in 2016. Some representatives are making waves in this mid-high-end segment, including Samsung Galaxy A 2017 series (Galaxy A5, Galaxy A7 2017) and Oppo F3 Plus, surpassing competitors in the same segment such as Sony Xperia Z5 Dual, Asus Zenfone 3, and HTC U Play.
